Illuminating the future

Over 30 years’ experience in avionics has secured for Jay-El Products a reputation as makers of the highest quality illuminated switches

Jay-El Products has been a familiar name in the avionics market place for over 30 years. As a major supplier of cockpit-control interfaces for the domestic US and international aerospace market- place, Jay-El’s products can be found in almost 40 different aircraft types worldwide. Innovative design has earned Jay-El the reputation of a quality manufacturer of illuminated push-button switches, indicators, caution-warning systems, time-delay relays, keyboards and integrated display assemblies.

Jay-El Products has been a familiar name in the avionics market place for over 30 yars. The company’s products can be found in almost 40 different aircraft types worldwide.

Reputation for reliability

These highly reliable products are used on every Boeing commercial aircraft, on the Apache Longbow upgrade, the C-130J transport aircraft, on the Phalanx systems upgrade for all navy ships, and in Tornado and F/A-18 fighter-aircraft cockpits.

Jay-El Products remains the only qualified source for illuminated switch applications for space vehicles. Recently, a major NASA prime contractor evaluated keyboard companies to select one with a reputation for reliability and expertise to design and build the auto-control system panel for the international space station Alpha (ISSA). Jay-El Products was chosen. As a result, Jay-El Products’ engineers have developed a propriety keyboard technology that allows for switch actuation with forces of less than seven ounces to accommodate a zero-gravity environment.

Continuous technological innovations include push-button designs that have set the standard of reliability in the industry. Innovations include keyboards that introduce the world’s first flight management system (FMS) panel. Technological advances and responsiveness have brought forth subsystem integration projects such as design and qualification of smart keyboards for commercial and military applications, and sunlight-readable LED lighting for most of Jay-El’s product line.

Ultra-efficient assemblies

With today’s rising costs and declining profit margins and the need for inventory control, it makes sense to buy assemblies to reduce floor stock and component quantities by conducting fewer transactions. Programme managers are relieved of tracking the many components that make up a major portion of the final assembly. The risk of shortages and damaged parts also is greatly reduced by procuring a fully assembled and tested unit. Additionally, the multiple stocking of parts and lengthy inspection time is further diminished.

By procuring a special assembly from Jay-El products, a purchasing department can reduce the line item buy from as many as 100 items down to one. No more will contract negotiations have to be made with numerous suppliers of switches, connections, castings, printed circuit boards, cables and miscellaneous hardware. Thus, quality approvals have to be given to only one supplier that reduces expediting, invoice tracking and endless approvals.

The choice of materials used in the construction of the special assemblies depends on the operational environment in which the equipment is to be used. Housing material can be selected from nylon composites containing carbon, glass or specific metals, any of which can be chosen for their strength, electrical and or thermal conductive qualities.

Product line expanded

Following the acquisition of DMT, an RF/microwave equipment manufacturer, Jay-El’s product line has expanded to include electromechanical coaxial switches, waveguide and coaxial filters and integrated assemblies. DMT has supplied RF/microwave markets for over 30 years. The switches are available in SPDT, transfer and multi-position, and options include TT Logic, high frequency (to 40GHz) and high power. A wireless filter line was introduced recently with waveguide and coaxial filter assemblies for cellular/PCS/PCN and wireless markets. Applications for these RF/microwave products include space satellite programmes, automatic test equipment (ATE), defence missiles and communications and cellular base stations.

Specific customer needs

The line also includes integrated assemblies, power dividers, multiplexers and switch matrices (VXI, 1553, IEEE 488 controlled). Filter designs are available in band reject, high and low pass, and band pass. These devices cover the bands from HF through Ka, including all high-power requirements. Custom designs are available to meet specific customer needs in addition to DMT’s standard filters. From indicator and push-button components through to fully integrated assemblies, from CPOTS applications to space hardware, Jay-El Products has proven it can meet the most demanding needs of a rapidly changing marketplace without compromise in quality or reliability.

Strict adherence to TQM principles, continuous process improvements and belief in operational excellence, mean that you can count on your products being delivered on time, every time.

The future

Jay-El Products is at the forefront of aerospace developments. Its products are found in a variety of applications. They are used in vehicles that keep watch from the depths of space, to submarines that protect the shores from the ocean floor. Jay-El Products signals the future. ©
